City Deep's Historical & Biophysical Profile

Mining Legacy

City Deep is positioned on the Witwatersrand Basin, which a gold-rich space. However, by the 1970s, the gush of gold mining quietened down, leaving abandoned shafts and huge mine dumps draping the Johannesburg landscape, (Robbins, 2018).

Industrialisation

Mines birthed the need for large heavy industries, along the basin. Now zoned for logistic and warehouses, it still retains residual pollution, (Toffah, 2013).

Infrastructure Lock-Ins

Mining required sufficient connectivity, which substantiates the rail and road networks that shape the water drainage systems and energy grids, (Harrison and Zack, 2012).

Critical Nexus Thinking

Walker and Boles, 2022

The critical nexus thinking is an interdisciplinary approach of examining the interconnectedness of socio-ecological systems, [existing] power dynamics and governance structures. It highlights how water, food, energy and other vital resources are politicised, by shedding light on inequalities and the urgent need for adoption of governance structures that address sustainability challenges appropriately.
